G-ma Menold's classic dessert — cooked prunes mashed and folded into strawberry-banana Jello at soft-set stage with whipped cream and chopped walnuts, poured into a casserole dish and refrigerated until firm.

The Story

This is G-ma Menold's recipe — a vintage no-bake dessert that shows up at family gatherings and disappears fast. Prunes get cooked down in a small amount of water, mashed, and left to cool. Strawberry-banana Jello is prepared as directed and allowed to reach the soft-gel stage. Once the Jello is ready, you whip heavy cream with sugar and vanilla to stiff peaks, then beat the Jello with an electric mixer, fold in the whipped cream and chopped walnuts, and pour the whole thing into a 9x13 casserole dish. Two hours in the refrigerator and it's firm and ready to serve. Put it on the community table and let guests cut their own piece — that's how G-ma did it.

Equipment

  • Medium Sauce Pan
  • Stove Top Burner
  • Electric Mixer
  • 9x13 Casserole Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cupPitted Prunes
  • 1 cupWater
  • 1 boxStrawberry-Banana Jello
  • 1/2 ptHeavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 TbspSugar
  • 1 tspVanilla Extract
  • 1 1/2 cupChopped Walnuts

Pudgy's Notes

G-ma Menold's recipe. The soft-gel stage is key — if the Jello is still liquid it won't hold the whipped cream. If it's too firm it won't blend smoothly. Aim for a consistency like loose pudding before mixing.

Instructions

  1. 1

Cook 1 1/2 cups pitted prunes in approximately 1 cup of water in a medium sauce pan. Mash, then let cool. (10 min)

  2. 2

Prepare one box of Strawberry-Banana Jello as directed. Let cool to soft gel stage. (1 hr)

  3. 3

Whip heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Set aside. (3 min)

  4. 4

When Jello reaches soft-set stage, whip with electric mixer. Add in whipped cream, mashed prunes, and chopped walnuts. Pour into 9x13 casserole dish. (2 min)

  5. 5

    Refrigerate until firm. (2 hr)

  6. 6

Place on community table and let guests decide for themselves how much they want to grab. (1 min)
