The Method
The Pudgy's Place Method
A simple system for planning a full year of meals — built around the way real families actually eat.
Why meal planning works
Meal planning becomes easier. Shopping becomes easier. You know what you're going to cook the week or month before you cook it. Budgeting and savings are a natural benefit of planning ahead. Fair warning though — once you figure out the Pudgy's Place method, you won't want to go back to the old ways, wandering aimlessly through the aisles of the grocery store hoping for divine intervention tonight and again the next day and the next.
If you're like me, you have your go-to meals. The ones you cook all the time. The many different things you can do with all that ground beef. Your special family recipes. Your fancy dinner feasts. By the time you count them all up, you probably know how to cook 45 different main dishes.
The real payoff is confidence. When you sit down to dinner knowing exactly how it got to the table — the marinade that went in the night before, the timing that kept everything hot at once — cooking stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like something you're genuinely good at.
The key idea
Think of your meals in terms of how often you could — or would like to — eat them. The most common ones are Taco Tuesdays, Wednesday spaghetti night, Friday pizza, Saturday night takeout, and Sunday dinners. These are all great traditions, but they become boring and monotonous if done every single week. The Pudgy's Place approach takes your favorite dishes and categorizes them by frequency: bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, and quarterly.
The four frequency categories
Sort every meal you know how to cook into one of these four buckets — then let the calendar do the rest.
Your most frequent meals — the ones you reach for every week
Start with eight of your most frequently cooked entrees. At this point they don't have to be specific — just types of cuisine. The Pudgy's Place defaults are Spaghetti, Stir Fry, a Chicken Dish, an Italian Dish, a Mexican Dish, a Ground Beef Thing, Pizza, and Dining Out or Leftovers. But you don't have to use these. Think Seafood, Southern, Soul, Vegetarian, Asian — whatever fits your table.
Meals you love but don't need every week
These are the dishes you enjoy often but don't want to eat every single week. Notice they start to get specific, but not so specific that you're locked in. Pot pie could be chicken in January and beef in March. Enchiladas can change every time. The flexibility and choice of meal preparation stays under your control.
Special meals worth the extra effort
Bi-monthly meals are the ones that take a little more time or planning — the Sunday projects, the slow braises, the recipes that reward patience. You love them, but you don't want to make them every month. Spacing them out keeps them special.
The big seasonal feasts
These are the meals that define the seasons — the holiday ham, the Thanksgiving turkey, the Easter spread. They only come around a few times a year, which is exactly what makes them worth looking forward to.
The Frequency Matrix
Once you've sorted your meals into categories, the next step is to create a matrix based on frequency. Place your eight bi-weekly dishes in a calendar spread out over two weeks. Do the same for your monthlys, bi-monthlys, and quarterlys.
The matrix was designed to avoid placing the same entrees together every time they're scheduled, and to put the more complex meals on Sundays when there's more time to prepare. Feel free to move days as needed to fit your own schedule. Substitute any day, any meal. Override at any time if you want to try something new.

You don't have to use the Pudgy's Place categories or meals. These are defaults — a starting point. Substitute your own favorites in wherever you like. If you can't think of eight meals right now, start writing down what you actually make on a calendar. After two weeks you'll have a clear picture of what belongs in the bi-weekly and monthly spots. Pudgy's Place is designed to be customized to your exact tastes. Hey, if it doesn't work for you, try another meal tomorrow.
